CANADIAN INVASION
Scott, Clint, Bob and Dave — collectively known as The Moffatts — are one of Canada's leading music acts. They have crossed over music genres three times, now leaning towards a popular edgy pop/rock. The Moffatts performed at Sweden's OKEJ 2000 festival, and TYCP's Johanna Fredriksson had the chance to sit down and chat with the guys.

Johanna Fredriksson: Who wrote the songs on the new album?
Clint Moffatt: We wrote ten or twelve songs on the album.
Scott Moffatt Ten or twelve songs?
Clint: Yeah, I said it. But the single Bang Bang Boom was actually written by a guitar player from Sweden [from a band called Europe.]

What is your favorite thing about each of your brothers?
Dave Moffatt: Clint is very hardworking. That's probably the best thing about Clint. Bob is...on the road, he makes us feel very calm. Everything is calm around Bob, 'cause he's very laid back and Scott...Scott is very creative and I like that.
Scott: That's it? [Makes a funny face]
Clint: Yeah, and Dave is...he's just nice, you know and funny.

Name one band or singer that you will most likely not find in your CD player and why not?
Bob Moffatt: I don't really listen to that many CDs. I would probably be like...I hate doing this...[Laughs] I would put in a CD just to see what it's like, you know like eating something...you try it once...
Scott: You have some serious talking problems today, man. You said eating something...

[Everyone laughs] It means any visual change of image. -- Scott Moffatt [on the album title]

Would you listen to The Backstreet Boys' type of music?
Bob: No, I probably wouldn't listen to The Backstreet Boys, 'cause on their previous records, they didn't write their own music.
Clint: I mean, you have bands that you like and bands that you just don't care to listen to. I don't think I can come up with a reason as to why I don't put on a CD. Like, my favorite bands are Bryan Adams and The Beatles, then bands that I don't like, I just don't take the time to put them in the CD.

Scott and Bob Moffatt Can you name three hockey players from Sweden?
Scott: Yup: Mats Sundin, Ulf Samuelsson and Peter Forsberg.

Describe your dream girl.
Scott: My dream girl would be very outgoing, just likes to do outdoorsy things, sports and likes music. [Smiles]
Bob: Yeah, the first thing I look at when I meet a girl...
Scott: No, answer your question!
Bob: Oh, my question?
Scott: Yeah, Bob. [Makes an "Of course, duh" expression]

What do you like most about being famous?
Bob: I think by being famous or well-known, you get to express your music, your thoughts to millions of people and get to travel and see all these different countries, like Sweden.

Do you ever get tired of signing autographs?
Clint: Sometimes you get tired, but not of that. I mean, getting jetlagged and traveling and then sometimes you don't have the effort to sign your name and then people get upset that you don't have that, so we try to make that energy, 'cause we realize it's important for you to have something to bring back home. I'm afraid of spiders and sometimes of flying. -- Bob Moffatt

When will your new album be out?
Dave: Sometime in October.
Scott: October 3rd.
Dave: October 3rd, so now you know!
Bob: We've run into situations where it's changed at the last minute, but that's the set date right now.

Scott Moffatt at OKEJ 2000 If you had to choose between Claire Danes and Kate Winslet, who would you choose?
Clint: I don't think I've seen Claire Danes.

She was in Romeo & Juliet.
Clint: I don't think I saw that, so it's kind of hard to choose if you haven't seen both.
Scott: Who?
Clint: Claire Danes and Kate Winslet.
Scott: Claire Danes, in my opinion. [Laughs]

Can you name three singers or bands from Sweden?
Clint: Oh yeah.
Bob: I can name more than that actually! Roxette, Europe and probably the biggest one, Abba Cardigans.
Dave: Dr. Bombay! There was this time when we were in Spain and this fan grabbed at my necklace, and she broke the chains off. -- Clint Moffatt

No, he's from Denmark.
Dave: Oh, I thought he was from here?

He lives here.
Dave: Oh, okay.
Bob: Can you name three bands or singers from Canada?

Yeah: Celine Dion, Garth Brooks, Bryan Adams and of course, The Moffatts!
Clint: That's good!

What does Submodalities mean and who came up with the name?
Scott: Clint came up with the name and it means any visual change of image.

Name one thing you are really afraid of.
Dave: I don't know...oh yeah, our dad!

[Everyone laughs]

Dave: I used to be afraid of the water, weird! But I got over that in Hawaii!
Clint: If one thing, it will probably be spiders! There's loads of them in Hawaii, so I got pretty much freaked out!

The Moffatts in Hawaii during recording

I’m never going to Hawaii!
Bob: I’m afraid of spiders, yeah, and sometimes of flying, like when you hear about the accidents that happen and…
Scott: The odds!
Bob: Yeah, the odds…
Scott: I’m afraid of heights.

What is your favorite thing about Sweden?
Scott: I like the girls!
Bob: Yeah, the girls are…
Scott: No, answer your question! [hits Bob on the shoulder]
Bob: Oh, okay. I just had to get that in there!

[Everyone laughs]

I think it’s great that we have these fans that stand outside the hotel. — Dave Moffatt

How old were you when you got your first kiss?
Bob: I was probably like four or five…it wasn’t serious or anything. It was just like fun. What about you Clint? How old were you?
Clint: In 3rd grade, so like eight years ago…I was eight. Eight was when I got my first kiss. [Looks down]
Bob: You were eight?
Clint: Yeah, Bob didn’t even know what a kiss was when he was five. [Hits Bob on the shoulder]

Have you ever been hurt by a fan?
Clint: I haven’t been hurt like, on the inside by a fan…
Scott: Emotionally!!!
Clint: Yeah, emotionally. But there was this time when we were in Spain and this fan grabbed at my necklace, and she broke the chains off. It didn’t really hurt, until I saw the welt in the mirror!

What do you think about fans giving up their lives for you?
Dave: It’s never happend before, thank god! ‘Cause our music is not something to like, die for!
Bob: What was the question?
Dave: What do you think about fans giving up their lives for you? Is that what it means? Am I right?

No, like dedicate!
Scott: I was like “Oh my god!”
Dave: Yeah, I thought you meant like, taking their life! No, I think it’s great that we have these fans that stand outside the hotel. They’re like the little record company…

Why did you decide to change your hairstyles?
Clint: I had mine for like, three years, so I got tired of it! Like, my favorite show is Friends and every week, they got a new ‘do, so it was kind of unfair!

Have you ever thought about doing a song with Hanson?
Bob: I don’t think it’s ever been a desire for us to do a song with Hanson, but we do respect them as songwriters…I mean, they wrote MMMBop. It’s never even been thought of!

What do you think is the funniest thing you can do for free?
Scott: Do a free stand up comedy show? No, I think just going around and messing with peoples’ minds. I guess that’s pretty funny! [Makes a funny face]
